Recurrent Disc Herniation
One of the complications that may result from a discectomy procedure is a recurrent disc herniation leading to reoperation. Large published, population based studies report reoperation rates of 9-25% following a lumbar discectomy procedure:

A repeat surgical discectomy procedure may be performed to treat a recurrent disc herniation. In some situations, a more invasive spinal fusion procedure may also be performed to treat recurrent disc herniation.

One of the primary reasons for recurrent disc herniation and reoperation following a first time discectomy procedure is that the hole in the anulus where the disc herniation occurs (anulotomy) never closes.
